The specification color for the rear truck marker plate is red fluorescent material, yellow reflective material with letters must be black.

The location must be such that the rear reflective markers meet the following requirements:

• 1. the markers must be mounted at or near the rear of the vehicle and be securely mounted so that no part protrudes from the outermost edge.
• 2. the lower edge of the markings must be horizontal and not more than 1,700mm or 400mm above the ground from the vehicle.
• 3. If the markings consist of one or more pairs, they must be mounted as practically as possible on the outermost edge of the vehicle.

From July 10th, 2011 vehicles exceeding 7.5t GVW, the fitment of Marker plates becomes optional on vehicles fitted with conspicuity markings. When used in conjunction with conspicuity marking the Marker Plates must be approved to UNECE 104 Conspicuity Marking Regulation 70.01 (which all our marker boards are).

Rear Marking Plates For Heavy Vehicles Requirement

It is a regulatory requirement that marking plates be placed on the rear of certain motor vehicles and trailers in order to improve their visibility and to provide the do not overtake turning vehicle warning to other motorists. The specifications colours of Rear Truck Marker Boards are red fluorescent material and yellow reflex reflective material with lettering must be black.

Position Rear reflective markers must be fitted to meet the following requirement

• 1. The Heavy Vehicle Rear Reflective Marking Plate must be fitted at or near the rear of the vehicle and be securely attached so that no part projects beyond the outermost edge;
• 2. The lower edge of the reflective marking plate must be horizontal and not more than 1,700mm or less than 400mm above the ground, whether the vehicle is laden or unladen;
• 3. Where the rear of the heavy vehicle marking plates consists of one or pairs, these must be fitted as near as practicable to the outermost edge of the vehicle.

Although rear marking plates installed on heavy vehicles and trailers must be retroreflective, i.e. made of a material that reflects an incident light beam directly back to its source, they cannot be used in place of other reflectors required by Australian Design Rules (ADRs) or vehicle safety standards.

Rear marking plates can be manufactured from three classes of reflective material:

• Class 400 material that complies with AS/NZS1906.1
• Class 1A material that complies with AS/NZS1906.2
• UNECE R70 Material that complies with the relevant requirements of UNECE Regulation 70

All rear marking plates on a vehicle must be complimentary and made of the same reflective material.

Class 2 heavy vehicle rear marker plates to be discontinued

As part of the 2016/17 review of AS4001, it was determined that Class 400 and 1A plates were more durable, offered improved retroreflective performance, and could be smaller than Class 2 plates. Accordingly, the use of Class 2 rear marking plates has been discontinued, and only Class 400, Class 1A and UNECE R70 plates are now to be used.
