Chapter 1: What are Reflective Stickers?

Reflective stickers (also known as reflective vinyl stickers and reflective decals) are a hard-wearing, waterproof custom sticker solution. These look especially good on black or dark colors to contrast with light silver reflective colors. They look great when they have a reflective background or reversed so the text is reflective against a black or dark background.

Reflective decals and stickers are durable, reflective vinyl, and can be mechanically cut to order. Our reflective decals are suitable for cars, walls, glass, and other substrates.

Reflective decals are not self-illuminated. Its properties are not noticeable under normal daylight conditions. It is specifically designed to be seen at night when exposed to artificial light, such as that from a car’s headlights.

Keep in mind that reflective vinyl has a color-changing effect. Color shifting means that there are multiple colors available (such as white reflective stickers, blue, red, yellow, and even black reflective vinyl), but when light is reflected back from the surface of the decal under nighttime conditions, they all appear white.

Reflective decals can be used to hide items. For example, you can create dark reflective decals on a dark substrate so they are only visible when light is reflected back.

Our reflective decals are made of high-quality vinyl that illuminates and reflects direct light. These custom reflective decals can be placed on any flat, smooth surface, including metal, glass, wood, plastic, and more. They perform exceptionally well at night when passing through your vehicle’s headlights.

Chapter 2: How do reflective vinyl stickers work?

Reflective vinyl stickers work by reflecting light back to the original light source. In daylight, the color looks like a regular vinyl decal. But under a headlamp or flashlight, the decal looks like it’s illuminated from the inside!

How light will be reflected from the applique and back to the original light source

This figure shows how the light will be reflected from the applique and back to the original light source.

What happens is that light is reflected back to the observer from tiny glass beads or micro-prisms embedded in the vinyl.

Because reflective decals require no electricity, they can add safety details to your gear without complicated wiring or increased battery drain.

Safety Reflective Decals can be used on any smooth, hard surface, from bike helmets to boats. Use them anywhere you want to add safety during nighttime outdoor activities.

Chapter 3: What is the difference between a reflective decal sticker and a regular print & cut reflective sticker?

The confusion over what is a reflective decal and what is a reflective sticker may come from vinyl cut graphics and lettering, but according to experts, all reflective decals are reflective stickers, but not all reflective stickers are reflective decals. Reflective decals, while decorative reflective stickers are usually used outdoors. They are transferred from one surface to another and there are three layers – the front is the mounting film, the back is the shipping paper, and the decal itself. A sticker can be a type of label, but not all labels are stickers. Tamper-proof stickers are either printed or cut from vinyl, with the main difference being the application or use of the sticker. Stickers are generally applied to any size surface. Decals may come in larger formats and are more likely to stick on walls, floors, and glass. By using a vinyl substrate, which is good quality material, the stickers can last in outdoor conditions and can be used for car stickers, or for more long-term circumstances.

3.1 What is a Reflective Decal?

Basically, reflective decals are decorative reflective stickers that are usually used for outdoor use. Reflective Decal stickers are made up of the paper on the back, the decal itself, and the paper on the front, which can be transferred from one surface to another. A decal sticker designs for cars, for example, go through an environmentally friendly solvent printing process. Generally, vinyl is the material they are printed on, although UV overlaminates may also be used. Decals can be used indoors on cars, water bottles, laptops, and any smooth surface. Decals can be in printed or cut form. Printed and cut vinyl decals can have images and patterns, or alternatively, decals can come in a solid single colour. The materials used by KWVINYL are designed to last 5 to 7 years.

3.2 Car Sticker – What is a reflective sticker?

A reflective sticker can be a kind of label, either printed or made from cut vinyl, which will last if it’s for an outside sign. Stickers usually have two layers – the paper you peel off and a decorative part with adhesive on the back and information or decorative design on the front. The term “sticker” can mean anything from a stamp to a beer bottle label to a car sticker. A quality, durable sticker can last 8 years or more.

Our experienced team has a diverse range of skills and years of experience, from traditional signwriting to cartooning and online web design. We love to be challenged and if we can’t help you, we’ll point you in the direction of someone who can.

3.3 Vinyl Stickers – What is a reflective vinyl sticker?

Reflective Vinyl stickers are wall decals and are cut with a vinyl cutting plotter. These vinyl stickers are also known as tattoos, vinyl, or wall stickers and they can be used to decorate a room, for commercial purposes, as a sign to promote a business, service, or branding in vehicles, sandwich boards, or in shop windows. They can be fixed to glass or other smooth surfaces on the wall for promotional or decorative purposes.

3.4 What Surfaces Do Vinyl Stickers Adhere To?

Vinyl stickers will adhere to any clean, smooth surface, with very few exceptions. However, the main ones include glass, plastic, smooth sealed wood, and metal. You can put one on your computer, your window, a wall or your vehicle provided the surface is flat and smooth.  For superior quality, KWVINYL signs can supply and fix the design or slogan, decoration, or advertisement on the surface you choose. So, if you want a professional job, don’t do it yourself, call in the experts.

3.5 Will a Reflective Sticker Damage My Car’s Paintwork?

Reflective stickers for cars are a popular way to have your brand seen all over town, but unless it’s stuck on professionally, you might have trouble removing it but it should not damage it at all, providing your car’s paint job is not inferior, or the wrong decal has been stuck on it.  It’s highly unlikely that a decal or sticker could remove paint, and in any case, the adhesives are made from acrylic which won’t affect the paint’s chemistry. But to be on the safe side, if you order vinyl decal film online to stick on the car’s body, choose the ‘car safe’ one option. If you don’t, you’ll get a decal with permanent adhesive which is not designed for use on vehicles, so it may damage the paint. The best option is to choose KWVINYL reflective stickers for this job so you know your car or wall paint is safe.

3.6 Reflective Car Stickers – Are Reflective Decals Easy to Take Off?

Taking a reflective decal from a painted wall can be a bit risky unless you are using a variety of removable wall decals. Vinyl wall stickers can be taken down effectively by warming the surface with a hairdryer in a warm setting. You slowly heat the corner and keep on heating and peeling until the sticker is removed. Use warm soapy water and a white cloth to remove any glue residue. If it doesn’t budge, try eucalyptus oil.

Chapter 4: Reflective Sticker Printing Method – The Difference Between Offset and Digital Printing

The main difference between offset and digital printing is in its method used to transfer images and text onto reflective vinyl. The differences for customers are that offset printing can often be more suited for higher volume printing, which begins to be economical at about 2,000+ copies. On the other hand, digital printing may be used more for short-run print jobs. Other differences include reflective sheeting sizes and color capabilities. Both types of printing produce incredibly high-quality products fit for professionals or businesses. However, most companies that need frequent, fast, and often changing print items choose digital printing. Therefore, the volume of printing is a fundamental difference between digital printings versus offset printing. So, let’s have a closer look at both printing methods, so you know the advantages and disadvantages of both systems.

    4.1 Digital Printing

Digital printing used to be called ‘copying’, but that’s outdated. Today, rather than copying an original, most digital printing is produced directly from computer files. For short runs, digital printing is the fastest, especially if there are many different original copies. The quality of digital printing is now almost the same as offset printing. While offset printing still performs better for some jobs and reflective sheets, but there are also some in which digital printing will perform as well as, if not better.

Rather than using plates, as is done in offset printing, digital printing uses choices such as toner or larger printers that use liquid ink. When a client needs a lower number of copies, say, a run of 30 greeting cards or 100 brochures, digital printing shines. More benefits of digital printing include its capability to deal with variable data. For instance, offset printing can’t accommodate a project if each copy needs a name, address, or unique code, so digital printing is definitely the best option for those tasks.

While offset printing produces fantastic print projects, many people and businesses simply don’t need 500 or more copies, so digital printing is by far the best solution. To apply the toner to reflective vinyl, digital printing uses ‘drums’ or electrostatic rollers, one per color, and an electrostatic charge will attract the correct amount of toner. This is applied to the reflective sheet and put through a high-heat unit to fuse the toner.

    4.1.1 Digital Printing’s Advantages:

    • Prints only the number of copies needed
    • Lower setup costs for short runs
    • Can print as few as 1, 30, or 60 or more items
    • Cheaper black and white digital prints
    • Capable of variable data
    • Digital quality has improved through new technology
    • Quicker set up

    4.1.2 Disadvantages:

    • Some inks can fade in direct sunlight
    • Digital doesn’t print metallic colors
    • Large numbers of prints can be expensive

KWVINYL Reflective Sheeting Industrial Trading Manufacturing Company in China has the experience, skill, and expertise to supply large and small companies with the digital print and designs they need.

With over 10 years of collective experience in the signage industry, our dedicated team of signwriters, designers, and production staff are a one-stop-shop for reflective stickers and custom reflective graphics.

    4.2 Offset Printing

Traditional offset printing is done using a printing press, wet ink, and printing plates. Modern offset printing produces text and images on a plate mounted on a cylinder with print rollers applying the ink to those cylinders. The cylinders transfer the ink onto rubber rollers or ‘blankets’ that set the image onto the reflective signs vinyl. It takes time to set up and do a job, and the final product has to dry before it can be finished. But offset printing does produce the highest quality on the widest variety of stocks. It also gives the most control over color.

Offset printing is used for a variety of print projects such as magazines, posters, books, stationery, and corrugated board. As mentioned, it’s usually more expensive and time-consuming to set up an offset printing job. There is one plate for each color and they have to be etched and applied to the rollers that transfer the ink to the reflective sheeting. The press then has to warm up by running on scrap retroreflective vinyl for a few minutes until there is enough ink on the rollers. This is a waste of retroreflective sheeting.

    4.2.1 Offset Printing’s Advantages:

    • Dependable superior image quality.
    • Fast and simple creation of printing plates.
    • Great for large numbers of copies.

    4.2.2 Disadvantages:

Anodised metal printing plates can become sensitive due to chemical oxidation causing unnecessary backgrounds that can damage the look of the project.

Lengthy setup times make it more expensive.

Advertising is the most important aspect of attracting customers to your website. It is important that people are well informed about your products beforehand before they look for what your company has to offer. If your advertisement appeals to them and gets their attention, then they will definitely be compelled to buy your product. They are the best because they make it possible for people to read the banner ads at night as well. This is their best feature and hence they are the best choice if you are going for a 360-degree advertising campaign. You can even get custom reflective magnetic signs which can add value to your promotions as you can make them suit your campaign.

The following are some of the benefits of reflective magnetic signs:

    Passive Marketing

This is easy marketing because all you have to do is stick a magnetic strip on your car and then have the car marketed for you. This will ensure that you can easily have time for other activities.

    Minimal investment

This is one of the most cost-effective ways to advertise your products as it fits your budget well and therefore is the best for you. Magnets are relatively inexpensive and you can use them yourself, so in the long run, it is the best for your business as you can always replace them.

    Other benefits

Car magnets can be used for many purposes as they can also be easily used to display certain rules of the status. They are the most cost-effective and hence are well known among non-profit organizations as well. If your company makes deliveries, the magnets will identify whether the vehicle is part of a fleet or belongs to an employee, which will provide you with a unique position in the marketplace.

Be sure to consider certain things before obtaining a reflective magnetic sign.

    Design & Appearance

The logo and tagline of the business or organization should be clearly visible to identify the company on the reflective magnetic signage. Without this, people will not be able to relate to your ad. Locals and those who will find the ad on the car will also need to know contact information and company details so that they can eventually follow up and purchase the product.

    Reflective Car Magnets

Reflective car magnets make it easy for people to read magnets at night. This is important if you are advertising a business that is open at night, such as a restaurant, nightclub, or even a security business. Also, if you plan to do business at night, such as making deliveries, you must use reflective car magnets.

    Information

During a trip, people may only see your car magnet for a few seconds; therefore, it is important to discover all the relevant and useful information within that time period. They should be able to read the complete information in the shortest amount of time possible, so it is important to keep the information only on the magnetic strip. It is important to keep the company’s phone number and website.

    Place

It is best to place multiple magnets on your vehicle. It will be easy to attract people and therefore a good idea for your business. Magnetic signs on doors may not always be visible in parking lots, so consider placing an extra magnet on the hood or trunk of your vehicle to ensure visibility on all sides.

    6.2 Bicycle Reflective Stickers

    6.2.1 Application Ideas

Clean the application surface with a warm washcloth. If the area is exposed to oil or lubrication (like your chainstay – the tube that connects your bottom bracket to the hub of your back wheel), use rubbing alcohol. Let dry, then simply peel the decals off the sheet and apply them in whatever pattern suits your fancy.

    6.2.2 Thematic Ideas

Match themes – this is my road bike. Dark blue decals match the color of the bike’s accents when not lit up, and the silver is subtle in the day and super bright at night – here you can only two chain links, but there are quite a few on the back of the seat stay (the tube that runs from near the seat post to the hub of your back wheel) for cars to see from behind.

Blending Colors – Black on the black bike and add KWVINYL reflective decals without compromising the color scheme. As you can see, you can’t see them. Until they light up at night. I personally think black-on-black screams Batman, but as you can see from the “Up, Up, and Away” on the seat stay. Using a complete rim set in black, as well as a couple of other well-placed accents.

    6.2.3 Rim Ideas

Our rim kits are always a great option for getting full, eye-catching coverage of your wheels, but you can use other decal sets to create unique effects. Remember to never apply KWVINYL reflective decals to the braking surface of your wheels.

On this project, we used a set of black and pink pros and cons to create an eye-catching pattern, and you can see a number of black elements that add extra visibility at night while remaining invisible during the day.

Please note: We made this pink reflective vinyl custom in-house, which is unfortunately very expensive to do. If you’re interested in pink (or another custom color), it’ll at least double the price of your project over our stock material.

Available in 8 eye-catching colors, add these retro reflective stickers to your helmet, bicycle frame, rack, trailer, stroller, or just about any other hard surface you want to be seen at night.

    6.2.4 Effective for nighttime visibility

We’re not promising that you will go faster but there’s a good chance you will. High visibility reflective decals in a striking leopard pattern. Reflective adhesives with an attitude to pimp your bike and maximize your impact in concrete jungles. This will give your bike a truly unique silhouette that will stand out in both daylight and nighttime. Attach the stickers to your bike or helmet.

Eight bright colors: Made with the same high-quality Reflective Film used to make our Reflective Wheel Stripes, they remove easily within 18 months without heat or accessories and have been tested for up to 7 years of outdoor durability in sun, rain, salt, and snow.

6.2.5 Can You See Me Now?

Our reflective bicycle decals use engineer grade reflective material to redirect on-coming light through glass beads and back at the light source so that drivers will see you more easily. Being seen on your bicycle is the first key to keeping safe, and KWVINYL bicycle decals will help you get noticed!

We offer 11 reflective colors and we have a variety of designs to complement your style. Check out our application ideas. We make all our decals in the house so custom designs are available. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

6.2.6 Customise your bike frame, helmet with these fun decals

Made of the reflective film which contains fine glass beads that reflect light back to its source.

Please note that reflective decals are no substitute for safety lights but will greatly increase your visibility on the road.

Show your bike some reflective love and bring out your inner artist with these fabulous reflective safety stickers. An innovative stylish option for the night cyclist.

Reflective stickers can be removed using your thumbnail and gently peeling them away. Remove remaining adhesive with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Retro Reflective Decals are not re-usable.

If you are interested in custom reflective bike stickers, please feel free to contact us.

6.3 Reflective Stickers For Safety Helmets?

Safety means being seen. It is vital for every member of your team to be visible at all times. These reflective stickers are ideal for emergency workers and facilities with low-light conditions, so you can be sure to see everyone, even from a distance.

Reflective Stickers are the industry standard for firefighters. Strips are fluorescent and supremely reflective. Fluorescence makes sure that your hard hat or helmet stands out at night or at dusk.

Our stickers use a patented material that can be applied without wrinkles. These reflective stickers are affordable, too.

What is the best way to apply a reflective hard hat sticker?

Peel off half of the liner. Use the liner-covered half to slide the reflective sticker into position before sticking it to the hard hat. When the reflective sticker is in the desired position, press the sticky part onto the hard hat and peel off the remaining portion of the liner. For best results, make sure the center of the sticker is the first part to make contact with the hard hat. From the center, gently work your way to the sides. Before pressing the decal firmly to the hard hat, make sure all sides are lightly stuck down. At first, it will look like there are wrinkles. Smooth out the wrinkles, making sure to work around the decal evenly, so it does not bunch on one side. As always, follow manufacturer guidelines regarding the use of reflective hard hat stickers.

    Why use a reflective label?

Reflective labels make it easy to spot someone in the dark using a flashlight. While they are only marginally more expensive than non-reflective hard hat labels, they could make all the difference in an emergency situation. We also offer photoluminescent labels, which glow in the dark.

    When are reflective strips necessary?

Our retro-reflective hard hat strips and trapezoids are durable and help you be seen. Our reflective strips are NFPA-compliant for fire helmet use where indicated.

Our company logo is pretty rough. Can it still be used for a custom hard hat decal design?

Yes, we have a team of artists who can clean up and edit the logo at no additional cost. Upload your logo using our wizard, or contact our customer service department for additional help with your logo design. Under most circumstances, we can have proof for your review the next day.

Should I apply my hard hat reflective sticker on the front or the side of my hard hat?

It is ultimately up to you where you want to place your reflective sticker, but award reflective stickers are often placed on the side of the hat, while logos are more commonly placed on the front. Check with your safety coordinator or hard hat manufacturer for guidance.

How do you eliminate the wrinkles that often form when applying the hard hat decals?

Don’t go for cheap, non-conformable decals. Unlike competitors’ decals, our hard hat labels are made with special adhesive, film, and liner to avoid wrinkles. The adhesive side of our decals has ridges that allow air to escape while the decal is being applied, and the flexibility of the material we use allows our decals to conform to a compound-curved surface without bunching around the edges.

What is the best shape for a hard hat reflective label?

We offer reflective hard hat labels in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the shape you choose is ultimately up to you. In general, larger labels tend to be harder to apply without wrinkles or air bubbles. Smaller circular labels and equilateral triangles with slightly curved sides are the easiest to apply to most hard hat surfaces.

Can I remove a helmet reflective label after it has been on for a year?

Yes! Believe it or not, they are easy to peel off, even after a year of use. If your company reuses or updates helmets, you don’t have to worry about a sticky mess every time you replace our reflective labels.

Can I create different hard hat reflective stickers for each of our workers?

Yes, we make it easy to design personalized hard hat stickers with different names on them. You can get in touch with our customer service department and we’ll set it up for you. For these affordable stickers, we recommend the rocker and mini-crescent labels.

Does the rocker reflective sticker fit the side arch of the helmet?

Rocker reflective stickers are the arched stickers that fit on the sides of a helmet. Originally favored by EMS workers and firefighters, rocker stickers are now common with construction and factory workers. These stickers are commonly used to identify supervisors, trained first-aid workers, or to distinguish between different sub-contractors on a job. A related sticker type is the “mini-crescent”. Mini-crescent labels fit over standard 2” outer diameter labels and contain a supplemental message.

We want to match one of our old sticker designs. It has a special shape that I can’t find on your site. Can you help?

Yes! We do not charge extra for special shapes. We use digital die-cutting equipment that can accommodate any sticker shape. We can cut around the outside of most logos, create a star, a special ‘winged’ shape, and more. Contact our customer service department for details.

Are there any potential dangers or drawbacks to putting reflective stickers or decals on my hard hat?

Two general rules of thumb should be followed. First, reflective adhesive stickers should be placed at least ¾ inch away from the edge of the helmet, to make sure they do not act as a conductor between the outside and inside of the hard hat. Second, periodically check your hard hat or helmet’s shell for damage, regardless of whether or not you have stickers on it! You should try to keep the area covered by stickers to a practical minimum, so you can inspect your hard hat or helmet’s shell for damage. Individual manufacturers may have more specific guidelines; if in doubt, check with your safety professional.

Should we laminate our reflective hard hat labels?

Generally, we advise against lamination. Lamination adds thickness and makes the reflective label more likely to wrinkle when you apply it.

Should I order preprinted hard hats stickers or just reflective stickers?

If you have a new team, need new hats, or just want to show off your logo, a custom printed hard hat can make sense. But with the vast improvements in digital printing and hard hat label materials, hard hat stickers are now exceptionally durable, attractive, and affordable. For a comparison of screen-printed hard hats with stickers.

What is the best color for a reflective hard hat sticker?

Contrasting colors are what we most commonly see: dark-colored stickers for light-colored hard hats and light-colored stickers for dark-colored hard hats.

What is the right size for a custom hard hat reflective decal?

The “sweet spot” for a hard hat reflective decal is usually 2″ or less. At that size, the label is conspicuous, but still easy to apply. Bigger isn’t always better, because oversized reflective decals can make it more difficult to properly inspect your hard hat for damage.

Chapter 7: The Importance of Reflective Stickers

Often, when it comes to traffic safety regulations, reflective stickers and tape are required to be placed on vehicles to increase visibility on the road at night. Bicycles and motorcycles aren’t the only ones that are required, even private vehicles and large trucks.

Many countries have made it mandatory for vehicles, highway turns and signage to have reflective stickers or tape on them so that motorists do not miss them.

However, the use of such stickers need not look ugly. They can also be decorative and stylish.

7.1 Why are reflective tape and stickers important?

When a reflective tape or sticker is hit by a beam of light, it reflects the light back and makes the sticker look like it’s growing. This lets people know that there is another car ahead of them, or perhaps a person on the side of the road.

At night, sharp turns in the road are often difficult to judge, which is why reflective stickers are often placed on the side of the road. This will make it easier for drivers to see the bends in the road.

In addition to this, driving at night can also mean that the driver is tired, which is why retro reflective stickers need to be placed on the side of the road, as the driver needs to see them reflected in the distance so that they are not surprised by other oncoming vehicles.

7.2 What are the benefits of using reflective stickers?

The biggest advantage is that reflective stickers can be used for a variety of purposes, especially due to their sticky nature? In addition, these stickers are highly resistant to all weather conditions, whether it’s raining or glowing, the stickers will be equally reflective.

A reflective sticker may be durable. However, it can still be accidentally damaged or scratched. Therefore, you should still check the sticker, especially if it is placed on a bicycle or vehicle or any structure that is subject to impact.

7.3 Where are reflective stickers usually placed?

Reflective stickers are used around houses, bicycles, and vehicles. They can be placed in many places and on different surfaces.

Reflective stickers can be placed on plastic, rubber materials, floors, wooded areas, walls, and more.

Here’s what is often placed on reflective tape and stickers:

    7.3.1 Trailers and vehicles

This is the most common use for reflective stickers. They are usually placed on the back and sides of vehicles, trailers or motorcycles. Most vehicles already have reflectors on them, but many companies and people are seeing the benefit of improving visibility by adding more reflectors, especially in the dark. This can be very useful if the vehicle or trailer is parked at night in a heavy traffic area or partially covered area, or in low light conditions.

    7.3.2 Motorcycles and bicycles

At the time of purchase, most bikes and motorcycles are already fitted with reflectors. However, since we’re concerned about safety on the road, it doesn’t hurt to add a few extra stickers. Make sure that the reflective sticker does not obstruct or obscure any critical parts of the bike.

    7.3.3 Helmets

Both construction helmets and bicycle helmets can be fitted with retro reflective stickers. If you plan to bike at night or work a night shift, at least a few reflective strips and stickers on your helmet can increase your visibility in the dark. This will protect you from accidental injury.

    7.3.4 Safety cones

Witch hats, safety cones, and traffic. These are just one of their many names and even the different designs they come in. Most of these traffic cones are made in highly visible colors and already come with applied reflective sheeting, but not all of them have reflective sheeting.

Worn reflective film or no reflective film can be easily replaced with new ones.

    7.3.5 Sewing garments

Not only can reflective light be obtained through tape and stickers, but you can also use reflective fabric. If you are one of those who are looking for clothes that need more visibility in the dark, then why not sew reflective fabrics on them?

Reflective tape, stickers, or fabric can be sewn onto your clothing so that you can be seen more clearly if you are walking or exercising on the street at night.

    7.4 Conclusion

Reflective stickers are a huge help to motorists and occupants because they add more safety measures for us. These stickers can actually save lives and are very beneficial to us. Listed above are just some of the uses for it, you can see more on this site

Chapter 8: How to Reduce Rear-End Collisions – Fleets and Utility Vehicles

8.1 Reduction of rear-end collisions and accidents in commercial vehicles through the use of high-visibility reflective materials

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, there are approximately 5.5 million automobile accidents in the United States each year, resulting in more than 30,000 fatalities. About one-third of these accidents involve rear-end collisions. Rear-end collisions occur when a driver fails to see a vehicle slowing or stopping in front of them.

The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that there are approximately 400,000 accidents involving “large trucks” (GVWR > 10,000 pounds) each year. Of these accidents, 5,000 results in fatalities, and 109,000 results in some type of personal injury, all of which result in property damage. Of these accidents, rear-end collisions resulted in a higher percentage of injuries, fatalities, and property damage. Keep in mind that these numbers only apply to large trucks.

Another fact to consider is that about 50 percent of all fatalities occur during the day and about 50 percent at night, suggesting that daytime and nighttime visibility are equally important.

Businesses with fleets of vehicles, utility companies, police departments, and emergency service organizations all have to deal with the cost and liability of road accidents involving their vehicles. These types of vehicles are at higher risk due to their tendency to stop near moving traffic. Every day while driving, you will undoubtedly encounter vehicles that must be slowed down and avoided. These would be ambulances, school buses, fire trucks, police cars, utility trucks, cable company vehicles, delivery trucks, gas company trucks, oil and fuel trucks, snowplows, garbage trucks, and other such vehicles. Early sightings of these vehicles can prevent collisions.

Consider this example. Everyone is familiar with brown UPS delivery trucks. They’re everywhere. It’s dark, so to speak, and you turn the corner at 30 mph and there’s a big brown van parked in the road. Since the van is brown, it blends in with the dark night. What prevents you from hitting the UPS vehicle? Now, suppose you are turning at the same corner and see the same truck, but with alternating yellow and red stripes marking the rear of the vehicle. Now you will see the vehicle and be able to slow down in time to avoid a collision. The key is that visibility is important.

When the task is to make a fleet of vehicles more visible during the day and at night, there are several factors to consider. These are –

    • The color of the material used.
    • Intensity or brightness if a reflective material is used.
    • The configuration of the tape or panel. (Chevron, non-tilt, message, etc.)
    • Placement of the material on the vehicle. (Position – rear, side, front)

8.2 Choosing the right color and intensity of reflective material to make the vehicle more visible

If you’ve been researching ways to reduce collisions or make your vehicle more visible, then no doubt you’ve come across the word “conspicuity”. Such as in conspicuity tape or conspicuity therapy. Conspicuity is defined as a characteristic of an object that affects the likelihood of getting the observer’s attention. In other words, it is something that is easy to see. For example, a bright yellow Ferrari is more conspicuous than a black Ferrari.

When marking commercial vehicles, the goal is to make them more visible or obvious to the human eye. Color and brightness contrast are two factors that affect conspicuousness. These factors are usually what trigger object recognition.

The average human has a field of view of about 130 degrees. Our central field of view is where we see details. Our central field of view makes up only 5% of the 130-degree field of view. The field of vision around us makes up the rest of the field. Color alone is not enough to locate or distinguish objects in our peripheral field of vision. In order to detect objects in that area, we need contrast, brightness, and color.

    8.2.1 Luminous contrast

    red yellow reflective chevron

Luminescence is defined as the sum of the visible light emitted by an object, substance, or material. In other words, how bright or vivid it is. In this case, we are interested in the visible light that is reflected from a surface to the human eye. The brightness of an object depends on the amount of incident light and the number of objects and reflections. (Some materials reflect more light than others.) A brightness contrast is simply the difference in brightness between two colors, whether they are side by side or one color in front of a dark or bright background.

The human eye distinguishes between color and luminance by two types of photoreceptor cells. Cones and rods. The cone cells are more concentrated in the center of the eye, while the rods are more external or peripheral. Cones distinguish between color and detail. Rods are more sensitive to changes in brightness or motion. Rods require less light to function and are more efficient at night. The cone gives us a central vision (color and detail) The rod gives us peripheral vision.

    Eye

When reading this article, it is the cones in your line of sight that allow you to see detail and contrast so that you can see and read the words. When you focus on the word, you will find yourself also taking information from your peripheral vision. This information comes from your line of sight. If something is moving around you as you read the sentence, you will notice it. Also, if there are unusual bright colors, you may see it as well. Try this. Click on the yellow and red reflective chevron stickers images above to make them larger. After clicking on the images, go 30 to 45 degrees to the right or left, then focus on something other than your computer screen. Note that you can still see the bright yellow and red graphics in the surrounding field of view.

During the day, the color of an object determines its brightness or luminosity. At night, when using reflective film, both the color and type affect its visibility. The type I am referring to is the brightness of the reflective stickers. (Type 1, 2, 3, 5, 8) For example, a prismatic reflective material (Type 5 or higher) will be about 5 times brighter than a standard engineer grade (Type 1). Thus, at night, both color and type will affect visibility. For this reason, we recommend using prismatic stickers on lower strength stickers.

    8.2.2 Color

Color is determined by which wavelength of light is reflected back to the human eye. The wavelength or combination of wavelengths gives what we call the color or hue. Colors such as fluorescent lime/yellow and fluorescent orange are considered to be the most obvious colors during the day and in low light conditions.

Definition of fluorescence- Light emitted by a substance that absorbs light or other electromagnetic radiation. It is a form of luminescence. Fluorescence makes colors appear to be glowing.

They are more prominent in both primary and peripheral vision. The primary fluorescent colors are lime/yellow and orange. Fluorescent lime is common in school areas and fluorescent orange is common in work areas. Fluorescent colors are especially visible at dusk or dawn when there is a greater percentage of ultraviolet light from the sun than from full sunlight.

Standard reds, oranges, and yellows are also visible colors. Red and orange can be used as contrasting colors, with fluorescent lime or yellow as alternate colors.

    8.2.3 Ratio

Brightness or luminosity is important, but you also need contrast to make an object stand out. Covering the back of a truck with only fluorescent lime or standard yellow material would certainly make it more noticeable. However, by adding a contrasting color (such as red or orange), the visibility of the truck in the surrounding and primary view can be greatly improved.

Red is often used in conjunction with fluorescent lime yellow and is very effective as a contrasting color. The most visible reflectors are red and fluorescent lime/yellow or orange and fluorescent lime/yellow. It’s hard to say which is the most visible. I would favor lime/red due to the contrast. The diagram below shows the three colors.

    • Fluorescent lime and red will provide you with a 3:1 contrast.
    • Fluorescent lime and fluorescent orange will provide you with a 2:1 contrast ratio.
    • Fluorescent lime and standard orange will give you a ratio of approximately 2.5:1.

    8.2.4 Summary

For maximum visibility, we recommend that you use fluorescent lime/yellow material and red or fluorescent orange or standard orange contrast material. A herringbone pattern is recommended, but alternating non-tilted patterns are also effective. The zigzag pattern slopes downward and outward at a 45-degree angle, which usually differs from the other lines on the vehicle and is, therefore, more visible. However, to the best of my knowledge, there are no studies that show that zigzag patterns are superior to simple alternating patterns. The main considerations are the brightness and contrast of the strips.

8.3 Reduce collisions – commercial, utility, and work vehicles – with high-visibility reflectors

Studies in the U.S. and overseas have shown that by using high visibility reflective sheeting, high side accidents can be reduced by as much as 41% and low side accidents by as much as 15%. The difference in effectiveness will be affected by the brightness, color, contrast, size, type, and location of the reflective treatment or panel. These figures apply to both rear-end and side-impact collisions.

Earlier in the article, we discussed the science of visibility or conspicuity and how to use high visibility reflective stickers or panels to reduce rear-end collisions. We also discussed the most conspicuous colors to use. In this article, I’ll cover the type (design), size, and placement of reflective treatments to get the most bang for your buck. In other words, what should your panels look like, how big should they be and where should they be placed?

8.3.1 Type of reflective stickers panel used (design)

There are several panel designs and color schemes available to mark the rear, side, and front of your vehicle to make it more visible. As we discussed in part 2 of this series, fluorescent lime yellow and red or orange are good choices for color combinations because they provide contrast and are bright colors in their own right. The diagram below shows the different configurations in which panels can be made. There may be more configurations, but these are the main ones.

    Caution - Stay Back

    Mockup

All three of the above panel styles will attract the attention of the observer. The advantage of having words is that they can convey a message at the same time. The bottom two are basic alternating color panels. The middle is non-tilted and the bottom is tilted, also known as a herringbone pattern. People choose different designs for different reasons. The V-shaped herringbone is chosen because it is unique and usually more noticeable, however, because it is used on fire trucks, it is often associated with that application. As a result, many companies or organizations will choose an intermediate pattern or message panel to distinguish their vehicles from fire engines.

    8.3.2 Reflective stickers panel size

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends covering 50% of the rear of the fire truck with a herringbone pattern of reflective material. The minimum reflectivity would be Class 1 or engineer grade. Again, any yellow or red would be acceptable.

By using a highly visible prismatic material and using fluorescent colors, the visibility factor of the panel is greatly increased. For example, the prismatic fluorescent lemon yellow reflects at a rate of 420 candelas. The standard engineer rating of yellow reflects about 70 candelas. This increases the reflectivity of prismatic fluorescent lamps by a factor of 6 at night. Other studies have shown that fluorescent lime/yellow is at least twice as much as visible daytime light. It can be perceived that smaller, brighter prismatic panels can do the job of larger panels with smaller reflections. It is recommended that you use prismatic grades, especially if you only want to cover a small portion of the vehicle. For non-regulated vehicles, the general rule is that you want to cover enough of the side or rear of the vehicle to make it eye-catching without being overpowering and distracting. The diagram below shows the different sizes and configurations of reflective panels.

    Reflective Chevron Panels

8.3.3 Placement of reflective stickers panels on vehicles

The final consideration will be where to place the reflective sticker panels for maximum visibility and effectiveness. The rear of the vehicle will be the first area considered, followed by the sides. Stopped vehicles are most likely to be hit from the rear, but side collisions are common with commercial vehicles as well. Panels should be placed as low as possible, or at the same height as the hood of a typical passenger car. Since the panels are retro-reflective and reflect light back to the light source, placing them too high will hinder reflectivity. If you pull a large truck behind you at night, you’ll notice that the lower reflective bands will still reflect and the higher ones will gradually dim as you get closer. Just remember that the light must hit the tape from the car’s headlights and reflect back into the driver’s eyes. If you have a panel on the upper part of the truck, the headlights won’t even come close to hitting that panel as the vehicle approaches. It doesn’t matter much from a distance, but it will not matter at closer distances. The pictures in the table below show how it works.

    How reflective stickers work

8.4 The best color choices for reflective stickers and panels

When marking a vehicle or trailer with reflective stickers, tape, or panels, it’s important to choose the right color combination. Color, contrast, and brightness are all important and can make the difference between visible and invisible day and night. The color you choose should “contrast” with the other colors it is intended for. This makes the target stand out. The color of the reflective sticker should also be ‘bright’ so that it can be seen from as far away as possible. The sticker “type” should also be as bright as possible. (Example – Type 1 is bright, Type 3 is bright, Type 5 is even brighter, and so on)

Bright Fluorescent Lime Yellow Red Chevron Stickers

Studies have shown that bright fluorescent lime-yellow is the brightest and most conspicuity color. This is true for both day and night. The picture above shows an example of bright fluorescent lime. Notice how the red contrasts nicely with you. (Both colors are reflective.)

Note – That being said, I just want to say that white is brighter, but it’s not a prominent color. It tends to blend in with white backgrounds, car headlights, street lights, the moon, etc.

    Reflective Fluorescent Orange Panels

Fluorescent lime is a very unique color that is not common in situations we see during the day or at night. The same is true of fluorescent orange. These two colors are noted for being unusual and bright. Of the two colors, the brightest is lime. The picture above shows the fluorescent lime and orange panels. Note that you still have good contrast and that both colours are very bright at night.

As an offset to the fluorescent lime, you need to choose between red, fluorescent orange, or standard orange. By alternating these colors, you will use the most visible color to provide the highest contrast. This allows you to be visible and safe both day and night.

In short, use red and fluorescent lime reflective material or orange and fluorescent lime material day and night. When placing the panel on a yellow or red vehicle, you can change the lime to white and then use orange or red as the offset.

Chapter 9: How To Put Reflective Stickers On Your Car

First – do nothing. DO NOT install it directly on top of the new paint. The release of fresh paint fumes will affect the bonding quality of the new reflective tape and it may all come off within a day or two. The fresh paint must be fully cured for at least 2 days. Another very important aspect – always apply even pressure over the entire length of the reflective tape. It is best to use a plastic squeegee or a small rubber roller to do this. Do not use a metal squeegee, as it may scratch the surface of the reflective tape. Don’t let anyone tell you “just put your finger on it and it will be fine”. Yes, it may stick, but just wait a season for the sun and rain, and then again, the new reflective sticker will curl up and fall off the new trailer. The surface of the vehicle must also be dry, free of grease and grime, preferably between 40 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

No sticker manufacturer has indicated that you cannot install reflective stickers in very cold temperatures, but the glue on the back of the sticker is a sticky material that will chill it, making it more difficult to bond. Note that some reflective stickers may stick really well even after a few minutes of adhesion. This is a problem when you remove a bent reflective sticker. It can take the paint off. KWVINYL makes a quality reflective film that can be repositioned – gently adhered until the adhesive reacts with the oxygen in the air, then really tightened after 48 hours. Contact us to confirm this reflective film.

For those of you working on boat trailers – galvanized surface in a word. The galvanizing process always leaves a rough surface. Reflective decals stick to high places. So, yes, all reflective stickers cannot compete with galvanized surfaces. Installation requires only uniform pressure.

Putting reflective stickers on your car or truck is an inexpensive and customizable way to make it stand out from the crowd. The process is also simple enough that most people can do it themselves, thus saving the cost of paying someone else to do it. These materials are easy to locate and relatively inexpensive, which makes reflective stickers a popular choice for personalizing the look of your vehicle.

9.1 Materials needed to Install Reflective Strips

    • Clean cloth
    • Dishwashing liquid
    • Masking tape
    • Reflective tape
    • Scissors
    • Water absorption raft
    • Water

9.2 Steps for installing reflective stickers

Step 1: Consider where to place reflective stickers. Determine where you want to apply the reflective stickers on your vehicle.

You may need to create pinstripes or a specific design. If you need help in coming up with ideas, conduct an internet search, and browse images of how others have used reflective stickers to customize their cars.

If you are using a complex design or are concerned about misuse of the stickers, try spraying a solution of Palmolive dish soap and water in a spray bottle at a 1:10 ratio. Spray the surface of your vehicle before pressing the sticker into place.

This will give you a few minutes to make adjustments before the tape fully adheres to your car or truck. This only applies to relatively flat areas; reflective stickers may not adhere correctly when going around corners.

Step 2: Wash the car. Plan to use a soap solution and a clean cloth to wash the surface of the car on which you plan to affix reflective stickers.

Tip: Use a mixture of soap and water or dishwashing detergent or another mild detergent in a ratio of about 1:10 to water.

Step 3: Rinse and dry. Rinse the area thoroughly with water and allow it to air dry. This will ensure that no grit or dirt remains on your work area that could interfere with the application of the reflective decals.

Step 4: Use duct tape to cover the reflective strips. Use the tape to place the reflective strips on your vehicle.

The backing of the tape covering the adhesive has not yet been removed. This allows you to see how the final product will look without having to do anything permanent, so you can adjust the straight lines and overall symmetry.

Tip: You should also place a long strip of Mylar tape in the middle of the reflective strips for further instructions.

Step 5: Tear off the tape. Remove the tape from one end of the reflective strips.

Step 6: Remove the protective liner backing. Carefully remove the protective backing paper about an inch from the longer length of tape paper in the middle of the backing.

If the backing does not already have a built-in cutout, use scissors to cut it open.

Step 7: Use an absorbent pick to adhere to the reflective stickers. Have an absorbent rake ready to help you apply the reflective sticker. Hold the edge of the reflective tape with one hand so that the protective backing is an inch or two inches from the surface of your car or truck.

With your other hand, press the rubber squeegee firmly into the strip where the sticker is and slide it over to your other hand in slow, controlled motion. Do this until the entire length of the reflective sticker you are using adheres to the vehicle.

Working from the center to the edges, run the squeegee over as much of the work surface as possible to ensure that the entire length of strips is free of air bubbles.

Step 8: Remove the center portion of the strips and repeat them. Remove the center portion of the strips and repeat steps 4 and 5 on the other side.

9.3 How to Remove Reflective Stickers

Evenly laying out the decals and going straight down a long trailer can be difficult. Drawing very thin pencil lines with very long straight edges works well. For really long term use, tapping lightly with chalk lines works well. Just use white chalk instead of something like bright lime to clean it up. For anyone who doesn’t know-fresh chalk is all different from the toner ink in the copier. However, breaking the chalk line is one of the fastest ways to get a perfectly straight line – just easy chalk.

So now you have an old trailer with 10-year-old reflective stickers that must be removed. The reflective sticker is almost permanently attached to the aluminum trailer bed. You have already discussed the sticker, but it is not a solution. There are several methods available. A heat gun will work well, but be aware that it will leave a lot of adhesive behinds. Using a suitable solvent (such as paint thinner or a suitable degreaser) to remove the old reflective tape would be better. Simply loosen one corner and keep spraying the back edge of the sticker with the appropriate solvent to loosen it and peel it off as you use it. Be very careful when using a heat gun and the solvents are together. Most solvents are very flammable and can cause a serious fire or explosion if used with a hot air gun with the solvent. Solvents can also damage fresh paint so try using a small test patch first. Also, be sure to use proper gloves and return plenty of fresh air with any solvents.

Reflective stickers are always used on vehicles for decorative reasons. Reflective stickers make cars and trucks more visible in low light conditions, which can improve safety on the road. It can be used on all types of vehicles, including commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and boats, so consider it your choice for any reason. If you need any additional help, please ask us for some advice on how best to proceed with your project.

Chapter 10: Custom Reflective Stickers, Decals, And Labels Glow In The Dark!

Some companies purchase them as unique advertising displays – not just any old bumper or window sticker, but one that pops out when your headlights hit it.

We’ve also created full-color custom reflective decals and sticker digital photos for real estate agents who want their signs to “pop-out” while driving at night.

    10.1 Vinyl Reflective Sheeting Grades

There are several grades and manufacturers of reflective vinyl. the USDOT (US Department of Transportation) requires at least a “prismatic” grade and a “diamond grade” for school districts or high hazard areas.

Engineer grade is the lowest reflective sheeting grade and is the grade we typically use for most of our private clients who get helmet decals or real estate signs because we can print on a digital printer. Diamond or Prismatic grades must be screen printed or decorated with an EC film, which is a translucent film with about 8 different basic colors.

Most of the signs you see on highways, interstate highways, or around town are constructed using aluminum panels that have reflective mirror graphics applied to them and then printed. If you are outside of USDOT’s jurisdiction, these reflective signs can be made with engineer grade decals and are much cheaper.
